Due to holidays and testing, my Monday classes ended up a week ahead of the other classes. So today, I had them play a speed quiz game. One student sits in the “hot seat” and has to guess the word on the screen behind him/her from their classmates’ English clues.
It really gave me a look at what my students are really interested in. For the boys, my slides on League of Legends and Ferrari were extremely popular. (Good thing I researched LoL by playing it for five hours yesterday. Research. Important research. Not for personal enjoyment at all) For the girls, Kim Soo Hyun and EXO got the best responses. No one knew who BTS was, which is a damn shame.
And then there were the random ones that involved a lot of yelling. Like “Devil”. In which for every single class, the students unanimously pointed at the student sitting in the hot seat and said “You.” Or their creative interpretations of Ghandhi.
My students are also way too clever. They went through 130 slides so quickly. For my last class, we had five minutes left over, so I let them watch a music video of their choice. Within seconds, they had G-Dragon’s Inkigayo performance loaded, shut the blinds, migrated to the front of the room, and turned the volume up. Within seconds. I have never seen such a concentrated, focused reaction from any of my classes. Ever.
I’m going to miss them over Chuseok.
